The approach to World Doula Day marks an exciting opportunity for our community to explore and deepen our understanding of reproductive and birth justice.

Join us for "Birth Justice As A Monday Meditation," our collective 2024 reading journey and discussion series beginning in March in honor of Women's History Month and extending through December.

Our 2024 Reading Journey

Discussions will be hosted by Lakeesha Harris, Executive Director for Chicago Volunteer Doulas. The syllabus is designed to connect the Reproductive and Birth Justice Movement in the U.S. with liberation movements in Palestine and Africa, using a rich blend of poetry, song, verse, prose literature, and storytelling. We'll pair our readings with poetry from Palestinian poet Suheir Hammad, her work Born Palestinian, Born Black, Kenyan poet Mwende "FreeQuency" Katwiwa, and many others.

Here's what's on our syllabus for 2024:

  1. March: All The Black Girls Are Activists by Ebony Janice

  2. April: Jailcare: Finding the Safety Net for Women Behind Bars by Carolyn Sufrin

  3. May: Healing Justice Lineages by Cara Page and Erica Woodland

  4. June: Beyond The Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon

  5. July: The Seed Keeper by Dianne Wilson

  6. August: The Smell of Rain On Dust: Grief and Praise by Martin Prechtel

  7. September: Self-Care for Black Women: 150 Ways to Radically Accept & Prioritize Your Mind, Body & Soul by Oludara Adeeyo

  8. October: The Disabled Woman's Guide to Pregnancy and Birth by Judith Rogers and Molleen Matsumura

  9. November: Sensual Faith: The Art of Coming Home To Your Body by Lyvonne Briggs

  10. December: Abolition Geography: Essays Towards Liberation by Ruth Wilson Gilmore
