This fundraiser is rooted in a legacy of resistance.
In the summer of 1961, including throughout August, Freedom Riders risked their lives to challenge segregation in the South. Their courage sparked national outrage, federal intervention, and a pivotal shift in the Civil Rights Movement.
Decades later, in August 2022, the Black August Freedom Rides brought reproductive justice organizers from the South to Chicago, continuing the tradition of movement, resistance, and care. The rides spotlighted the long distances many people must travel to access reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare due to state bans and restrictions.
This powerful act of protest and solidarity was co-led by Lakeesha Harris, then co-executive director of Lift Louisiana — and now Executive Director of Chicago Volunteer Doulas.
At CVD, we continue this legacy through our Doula education and training programs, and our full-spectrum CVDoula family support work — providing care rooted in justice, compassion, and community.
On Saturday, August 16, from 4–8 PM, you can support our work in birth and reproductive justice simply by ordering dinner. Chipotle will donate 25% of qualifying orders to CVD, turning your burrito into a small act of radical care.
