This month, we celebrate National Breast/Chest-feeding Month, highlighting the advantages of breastfeeding for infants and mothers. Many CVDoulas offer lactation support. Each Doula is equipped with a wide range of certified knowledge and is matched in the best-suited ways to meet the client's needs.
According to the CDC, breast/chest-feeding provides essential nutrients and antibodies that help protect against illnesses such as breast and ovarian cancer, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), asthma, allergies, and childhood obesity. Breast milk is the perfect food for babies, and it promotes bonding between parent and baby while providing all the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and development. Additionally, breastfeeding can financially benefit families, reducing medical expenses and the need for formula.
Despite the many benefits of breast/chest-feeding, it can be challenging for some mothers. Thankfully, lactation consultants and breastfeeding classes provide valuable resources and support for families. Chicago Volunteer Doulas connects birthing families with our Doulas or refers them to our community collaborators when we work with families who express the need for lactation support. National Breastfeeding Month reminds us of the importance of breast/chest-feeding and the need for continued support for lactating families. Promoting and supporting breast/chest-feeding can help ensure all babies receive the best possible start in life. Let's celebrate and promote the benefits of breast/chest-feeding not just this month but throughout the year.
