Speaking of Roe: Join the Panel on Reproductive Justice and the Jane Collective

Updated: Oct 25, 2024

Speaking of Roe

As we continue navigating the evolving landscape of reproductive rights, it's essential to reflect on the events that shaped the fight for reproductive justice. Speaking of Roe is an upcoming panel discussion that will focus on the profound history of Roe v. Wade and the courageous actions of the Jane Collective, an underground group that provided safe, illegal abortions in Chicago before the landmark decision.

Hosted by Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller, this event will feature several powerful voices, including Chicago Volunteer Doulas' Executive Director, Lakeesha Harris. The panelists will offer insight into how the Jane Collective helped countless people access healthcare during a time when abortion was criminalized, putting their safety and freedom on the line to ensure others had choices. These actions were critical not just for reproductive rights but for broader human rights, as they underscored the importance of bodily autonomy and accessible healthcare.

The Jane Collective operated from 1969 to 1973 and worked under extreme circumstances to ensure that people who needed abortions received compassionate care. Their work serves as an inspiration to today’s reproductive justice movements, and their story is essential for those of us in birthwork to understand. Learning about this history helps to ground our current efforts in providing equitable care to those in need, regardless of legal, social, or financial barriers.

At Chicago Volunteer Doulas, we believe that part of our responsibility as birthworkers is to educate ourselves on the theories and practices that inform reproductive rights. Understanding where these concepts come from—such as the lessons from the Jane Collective—helps us better advocate for our communities. We encourage all doulas and reproductive justice advocates to attend this panel, not only to gain historical context but to participate in a vital discussion about the future of reproductive rights.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn, connect, and grow alongside others who are committed to reproductive justice. Speaking of Roe will take place on Monday, October 28, 2024, from 6 PM - 8 PM at Moraine Valley Community College. The event is free and open to the public, with both in-person and online registration options available.
